CHAPTER 3

BRIAR, THREE YEARS LATER

“Is there any change, Doctor?”

I close the hospital door behind me and cross to my aunt’s bed. Doctor Wrythe stands with a chart in her hands, reading over the details of my aunt’s medical details. She’s quiet, hitting her mid-fifties and has a no-nonsense feel about her.

Aunt Pearlyn lies in the middle, blankets tucked around her. Looking down on her, you would think she is asleep and dreaming. There’s not a line or crease on her perfect skin. She looks peaceful.

“Ms. Rose.”

The doctor, done with reading over my aunt’s medical chart, takes in my dinner uniform and simple white work shoes. My untidy ponytail and sleep deprived appearance come under her scrutiny next—dark shadows under my eyes, the lack of color on my skin. I can’t remember the last time I sat down to have a meal. I’m a wreck.

“Has she woken up?” I try hiding the mustard stain on the baby blue zip-up one-piece dress; a fugly misfortune that comes with the job, but it’s no use. Nor is hiding the fact I haven’t slept in the five days my aunt has been in the hospital.

“You just missed your other aunts. I’ll tell you the same thing I told them. I don’t know why your aunt is not waking up, hon. I’ve never overseen a case where the patient simply falls asleep and cannot wake. There’s nothing wrong with her. All the tests are coming back negative.”

“Is that a good thing or bad? Is there anything that can be done to make her wake up?” I already know the answer to my question. I guess I just need someone to say something that counters what I believe is the real problem. The worst part is, if I’m right, there is no test in the known medical world that can detect it. Aunt Pearlyn has a broken heart. Grief hits us all differently and my mother’s sister is the most fragile of the triplets. As a result, I believe her heart couldn’t take another day of the stress and pain of losing my mother. The anniversary of her death is today. I don’t know for sure, but I swear the timing doesn’t seem coincidental.

“I’ll be back to check on her before my shift ends. We can talk about options then.” The aging doctor with the kind blue eyes pauses after returning the clipboard into the cubby at the foot of the bed. “Ms. Rose, I rarely talk about expenses, but do you have a plan for the expense of this stay?” Her eyes drop to my name tag and that one gesture puts lead in my stomach. She says it all without uttering another word.

“I’ll figure it out,” I answer. What else can I say? When they whisked me away, my aunts lost everything. Insurance, bank accounts, connections. Even their names. And so did I. They made sure nothing could tie us back to the Erose empire.
